Xavier Ho is a queer researcher living in Naarm. He is a Senior Lecturer at Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA). He received the CSIRO Medal for Diversity and Inclusion. He won the Australian Good Design Award for Social Impact.
Pride at Play celebrates LGBTQIA+ in games and makes them more accessible for the public. The exhibition will bring together queer games from Oceania and Southeast Asia, putting “queer indie games” on the map. It took place within the Pride Amplified, part of the Sydney WorldPride 2023 program, and it will be brought to Melbourne during St Kilda Film Festival in June 2023.
Infinite Colours draws data from 2,499 queer independent games for about 12 seconds each. Each game adds a unique shape and colour onto the canvas, and plays a unique string of notes. Over 8 hours, the canvas will be filled with infinite colours to celebrate LGBTQIA+ independent videogames. History has always been queer. Through this generative visual and sound work, we aim to demonstrate the collective activism, movement, and creative expressions that queer folks are making to be visible, heard, and to say that we are here. But queer movement does not happen over night; queer resistance is accumulative and built over generations of self-sacrifice and self-acceptance.
Wishmakers invite you to imagine and tell a story about a fantastical and familiar village where you will design creative solutions for positive impact, and turning tricky relationships into lasting social bonds. The game is developed by SQUIGGLE, a team of queer-inclusive educators, researchers, and designers based at The University of Sydney. Though based at Monash, I am one of the designers at SQUIGGLE working with them to design inclusive learning resources with games and play.
