Germany

I'm Sandra - Sunny - a designer from Germany. I live in the coal mining, industrial Ruhrpott with my wife, who immigrated from Alabama - All for 'lil ole me.

How does being queer inform your work?

Gives ya a lot of perspective, doesn't it - You're already predisposed not to design for smallest common denominator, so why not ramp it all the way up? Not to mention - People clock me as odd from the get-go. It's actually a little freeing. They expect weird, so I give them weird!

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

I've gotta go the boring route and say it's Steven Universe. I'm at that age where Ruby and Sapphire were the first queer couple I ever saw in mainstream media - Just when I was getting together with my wife. It hit hard.

Which other queer people inspire you?

I grew up with a massive interest in graphic novels, and that is definitely where a whole bunch of inspiration's coming from - from ND Stevenson's Nimona to Alison Bechdel's Dykes To Watch Out For, a lot of my all-time greats are from comics.
